David's Census (2 Sam 24)

February 25, 2024 at 7:00:00 PM

SCRIPTURE TEXT: 2 Samuel 24:1-22; 1 Chronicles 21:1-30

In 2 Samuel chapter 24 & 1 Chronicles chapter 21, we find similar (though also distinct) renditions of one of the Bible’s more confounding moments, when God levels a judgment of illness upon Israel due to an apparent sin of David in conducting a census. Modern readers of these passages may wonder: why would it be a sin for David to conduct such an apparently routine & understandable act of governance? And even if this was a sin, why would God levy its toll upon so many “innocent” Israelites (2 Sam 24:15) if the error was David’s? Indeed, how could this judgment of God even be just if it was God Himself who incited David to take the count (2 Sam 24:1)? But perhaps even more distressing, 1 Chronicles 21:1 says that it was Satan who incited David in this manner—so which verse is right, & why does the Bible appear to contradict itself in this way? In this message from our series on The Final Days of David, Pastor Court endeavors to answer these questions while also unveiling the provision of God that comes even through a period of pestilence like that described in these chapters.
